THE IDEA TO KEEP

Use と for the person who joins you, で for where an activity happens, and に for a specific meeting time.

A little context makes the meaning easier to see.

01Choose the activity before the particles

Planning with a friend is easier when you start with the action: meeting, eating, studying, or going somewhere. Each action asks for different information. カフェで会いましょう invites someone to meet at a café; カフェに行きましょう invites them to go to a café. The place is the same, but meeting there and going there are different relationships.

カフェ会いましょう。

Kafe de aimashō.

Let’s meet at the café.

で marks where the meeting takes place.

02Add a time and a companion

三時にカフェで会いましょう adds a specific clock time. If you are telling another person about the plan, 友達と adds the friend who joins you. Time, setting, and companion can all appear in one sentence. The particles keep the roles clear, so there is no need to translate the English words “at” and “with” one by one.

三時カフェ友達会います。

San-ji ni kafe de tomodachi to aimasu.

I meet a friend at a café at three.

Time に → setting で → companion と.

03Tomorrow can stand on its own

明日、三時に会いましょう combines a relative day word and a specific time. 明日 does not normally need に here, while 三時 takes it. If you want to say you are free until five, 五時まで大丈夫です gives an endpoint to your availability. The time expression determines the pattern, not simply the fact that you are discussing a schedule.

04Practice a tiny dialogue

Try this exchange aloud: A asks 何時に会いましょうか, and B replies 三時に会いましょう. A then asks どこで会いましょうか, and B replies 駅の前で会いましょう. Notice that に stays with the time question and で with the meeting-place question. Now swap the time and place for your own plans and answer without reading.

You may also meet a person with 人に会う, which is another valid construction. This guide uses と会う to emphasize meeting with someone. Do not assume every sentence has a single possible particle just because a beginner activity offers one answer. A good exercise states what relationship it wants you to express.
